Many medical studies show that in the past, hearing loss often appeared in the elderly over the age of 60, now it begins to appear more at a younger age. Wearing headphones continuously for many hours or days will lead to overworked nerve cells in the cochlea, causing negative effects on the ears such as hearing loss, even some frequency or total deafness. ear. When the ears are buzzing or have permanent hearing loss, it affects quality of life
The wrong patterns of ear damage when wearing headphones:
– Weakening of inner ear neurons: Listening to music with headphones continuously for many hours, many days, the nerve cells in the cochlea are overworked, causing fatigue. The cochlea is subject to noise for a long time, so when other people speak, the patient listens to a hearing without understanding, and the ability to sense speech is poor, although the audiogram shows that hearing has not changed much .
Each person’s cochlea has many hearing cells, many of which are responsible for hearing different frequencies. Sound, noise is too strong and prolonged will cause constant stimulation, resulting in hearing fatigue. Listening to music with high intensity, or listening before going to bed and then falling asleep not only damages the auditory organs but also affects the central nervous system.
– Some cases have manifestations such as tinnitus or dizziness, headache, chest tightness, dizziness, general fatigue … These are signs of an acute sound injury. after a few hours but it can also last for a few days or leave behind auditory and neurological sequelae.
– The louder the sound, the more harmful: Sound over 85db continuously for more than two hours a day and lasting for many months will cause hearing loss. Currently most music players with headsets have maximum power up to 120db, which will naturally harm if not used properly.
Patient may not feel hearing loss right away, but only after a while. Loud noise or music will damage the high-frequency nerve cells first, and then the medium and low frequencies. As such, hearing with the average frequency of normal speech will be affected.
Other harms:
– Loss of concentration, driving can cause accidents, when wearing headphones for a long time, the exhausted nerves make the ears unable to analyze and recognize speech and lead to slow response, poor absorption.
– Wearing headphones while sleeping stimulates the brain to work continuously. Waking up will be tiring, drowsy, sleepy, distracted, poor quality, easy to cause accidents when doing a job at high altitude, controlling machines or driving …
– The ear buds often cause moisture, easy trauma to the skin of the ear canal, causing bacteria, fungi to grow, causing inflammation of the outer ear canal due to bacteria, eczema, and fungal infections. If wearing a headset that does not fit properly, the ear canal and ear door will feel achy, headache …
How to limit harm when using headphones:
– Do not turn on the volume too loud, adjust so that the volume level is not more than 60% of the highest level of the device. Do not wear headphones for too long, should not wear headphones while sleeping easily.
– Use headphones that fit snugly against the ears so as not to increase the volume due to the influence of outside sounds. If not, remember: the louder the volume is, the shorter the listening time will be.
– Should use earphones with ear cups. These headphones will prevent outside sounds from affecting the “fidelity” of the sound, but are very expensive and also quite “cumbersome”, so they are not favored much by young people. However, this is the best choice to limit the harmful effects of wearing headphones.
